Back to Basics: Simple Steps for Better Health

As a chiropractor, I often see patients who are looking for ways to improve their overall health. They come to me seeking advice on complex fitness regimens, expensive health club memberships, or extreme diets. While these things may have their place, getting back to the basics is the best way to achieve better health.

One of the most fundamental aspects of good health is getting enough sleep. The average adult requires 7-8 hours of sleep a night. If you're having trouble sleeping, it's important to address the underlying issues, such as pain, emotional stress, hormonal imbalances, or sleep disorders.

Another basic yet vital component of good health is regular exercise. It's recommended that adults aged 18-64 accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week in sessions of 10 minutes or more. Finding activities you enjoy and incorporating them into your routine can make exercise more enjoyable and sustainable.

Practicing gratitude is another simple but powerful tool for improving overall health. When you're feeling overwhelmed or in a foul mood, take just 30 seconds to list five things you're grateful for. This exercise can help shift your perspective and put you in a better frame of mind.

Eating well is another basic yet crucial aspect of good health. Stick to whole, natural, unprocessed foods and avoid anything with ingredients you can't pronounce. Eat slowly and savour your healthy food choices. Listen to your body and eat when you're hungry, stopping when you're satisfied.

Staying hydrated is often overlooked but essential for good health. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Invest in BPA-free refillable containers and fill them with filtered tap water. Sipping water throughout the day will keep you hydrated and support your physical and mental well-being.

Listening to your body is an important skill to develop. Pay attention to any signs of stiffness, thirst, tiredness, or hunger. Your body knows what it needs, so be mindful and address those needs promptly.

Addressing and managing stress is another key aspect of better health. Emotional stress can take a toll on both your physical and mental well-being. Practice gratitude, talk to someone about your problems, schedule time for yourself, and be proactive in addressing the underlying causes of your stress.

Being positive, patient, and understanding is an attitude that can greatly benefit your overall health.

Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.

Reflect on this quote by Lao Tzu and take time each day to focus on all the good in your life while making efforts to eliminate the bad.

Finally, be proactive about your health. Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider can help you stay on track and achieve your health goals.
