Neck and Shoulder Pain? Check Your Phone!

In 2020, just over 33 million Canadians use a smartphone and these numbers are only expected to increase. The average Canadian spends almost 3 hours a day on their phone.

How much time do you spend on your mobile devices?

While many believe that smartphones and mobile devices improve our lives, it’s important to note that this technology comes with a price…

What is ‘Text Neck’?

Text neck is the term used to describe neck pain and damage from holding your head at an unnatural angle while on your mobile device or tablet, too frequently and for too long.

Increasingly common

Symptoms can range from muscle tightness and headaches to muscles spasms and severe, neck, shoulder, upper back pain and nerve pain in the entire arm. These problems may eventually manifest into degenerative changes and an increased chance of arthritis.

Consider:

Holding your head at a down angle causes an unnatural amount of stress on your neck.

If your neck is angled at 60 degrees, that's 60 pounds of extra stress on your neck... that's like carrying an 8-year-old with just your neck for support!

Stop tablet and mobile device neck strain

  • Hold your devices at eye level whenever possible

  • Take breaks from your portable devices

  • Stretch your neck, shoulders and upper back

  • Practice good workplace ergonomics

  • Be mindful of your posture
