Why Strong Hips Matter More Than You May Think

Your hips do much more than help you move your legs. They play an important role in nearly every movement you make throughout the day, from walking across the room and climbing stairs to maintaining your balance and moving your lower back comfortably.

Strong, mobile hips help create a stable foundation for the rest of the body. The muscles surrounding the hips help control the position of the pelvis as you walk, stand on one leg, step off a curb or climb stairs. When those muscles are working well, everyday movement can feel smoother and more coordinated.

Hip mobility matters too. Your hips are designed to move in several directions. When that movement becomes limited, your body may compensate by asking the lower back, knees or other areas to do more of the work. Maintaining comfortable hip movement may therefore help reduce unnecessary strain during bending, turning, walking and other daily activities.

Balance is another important piece of the picture. Every time you take a step, you briefly support your body on one leg. The muscles around the hip help keep the pelvis and trunk steady during that moment. This becomes especially important as we age and want to remain confident and independent during everyday activities.

Fortunately, supporting your hips does not have to mean following a complicated exercise program. A few simple habits can make movement part of your normal day:

  • Take regular walking breaks instead of sitting for long stretches.

  • Use the stairs when comfortable and appropriate.

  • Change positions frequently throughout the day.

  • Practice standing up from a chair without using your hands when you can do so safely.

  • Include gentle hip movement during your usual stretching or warm-up routine.

  • Stay active with activities you enjoy, such as walking, gardening or recreational exercise.

If hip stiffness, weakness, or discomfort affects how you walk or move, it may help to have the area assessed. Understanding how the hips, pelvis and lower back work together can help guide an appropriate approach to keeping you moving comfortably.
