Weekend Warrior Wellness

Do you spend most of the week sitting at a desk, driving or following a fairly quiet routine, then jump into golf, pickleball, cycling, yardwork or home projects on the weekend?
You may be a “weekend warrior.”
Staying active is good for your overall health, but a sudden increase in movement can leave your body feeling stiff, sore or strained. Muscles and joints that have been relatively inactive during the week may not be ready for several hours of repetitive bending, twisting, lifting or quick movement.
A round of golf can involve repeated rotation. Pickleball or tennis requires sudden starts, stops and changes in direction. Gardening and home projects may include prolonged bending, kneeling and lifting. Even a long bike ride can feel demanding when your body is not accustomed to the position or distance.
Prepare Before You Play
A short warm-up can help your body transition into activity. Start with a few minutes of walking and gentle movements that resemble the activity you are about to perform. Gradually increasing your effort is usually better than beginning at full intensity.
Pace Yourself
It can be tempting to fit an entire week’s worth of activity into one afternoon. Take regular breaks, drink water and pay attention to early signs of fatigue or discomfort. Changing tasks or positions can also help reduce repetitive strain.
Keep Moving During the Week
You do not need to complete a long workout every day. Short walks, mobility exercises and regular movement breaks can help keep your body prepared for weekend activities. Even standing up and moving for a few minutes throughout the day may help reduce stiffness caused by prolonged sitting.
Listen to Your Body
Some temporary muscle soreness after unfamiliar activity can be normal. However, pain that persists, worsens or limits your usual movement should not be ignored.
Chiropractic care may help address joint restrictions, mobility concerns and muscle tension so you can continue enjoying the activities you love.
