The Many Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Updated: Mar 6

Chiropractic treatment is commonly known for its ability to address musculoskeletal issues such as sprains, strains, headaches, and sciatica. When a new patient visits a chiropractor, a standard history and orthopaedic exam are usually conducted, along with a postural check and an assessment of spinal joint motion.

This evaluation is crucial because structure and function are closely intertwined. The stresses of daily life can lead to problems ranging from minor discomfort to severe issues. Since the spine plays a central role in our structure and serves as the relay station for the central and peripheral nervous systems, it is essential to address any problems that arise. Restrictions in spinal joints, often referred to as subluxation complexes, can manifest as pain and limited motion in different regions of the spine and pelvis.

Moreover, issues with organs or tissues supplied by these nerves can also result in problems at the corresponding spinal level, affecting the relay station. The goal of chiropractic adjustments is to restore motion in restricted segments, reducing irritation to the nervous system. Addressing these restrictions triggers a cascade of beneficial effects, such as decreased muscle spasms, the release of endorphins, and reduction of local inflammation, acting as a "re-boot" for the body's nervous system.

For example, a patient with chronic mid-back pain and gastric reflux symptoms may experience relief in both areas through chiropractic care. The nerves supplying the stomach region overlap with the area of their back pain, suggesting that by reducing irritation to the nerves in the mid-back, improvements in other areas supplied by those nerves, like the stomach, may also occur.
