We have mentioned before that when you visit us here at Colasanti Chiropractic and Wellness Centre, that your chiropractic appointment may often include other therapies.
Today we’ll look at one common therapy we use: TENS.
What is TENS?
TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. TENS is a very common method of electrical nerve stimulation. “Transcutaneous” means that which is applied onto unbroken skin and penetrates through to the lower layers.
We apply electrodes to the muscles which are related to the pain. The level of electrical current is based on feedback from the patient. Most patients feel a tingling or massaging sensation and involuntary muscle contraction. Generally, a TENS session lasts around 15 minutes.
Benefits of TENS therapy
Reduces inflammation to the applied and surrounding areas
Improves circulation
Helps to speed healing
Reduces muscle spasms
Release endorphins which are the body’s natural pain killers.
Help block pain signals from nerves
Often this therapy is performed in conjunction with heat therapy, where heat packs are placed above the TENS electrodes for the duration of the session. The heat also improves circulation which often makes a chiropractic adjustment easier as the muscles are more relaxed, the related nerves stimulated and the patient in less pain.
