In a world that constantly urges us to have more, do more, and achieve more, it may feel counterintuitive to consider the idea of degrowth. But this concept, championed in environmental and economic circles, is not just about sustainability on a global scale. It offers profound insights for personal health and happiness, too.

What Is Degrowth?

At its core, degrowth challenges the assumption that more is always better. It's a mindset that prioritizes well-being, simplicity, and balance over constant expansion and accumulation. While originally applied to rethinking economic growth in favour of environmental sustainability, it can also be applied personally, starting with the small things.

The Case for Owning Less, Doing Less, Stressing Less

When we simplify our lives, whether by reducing screen time, cutting out unnecessary purchases, or even decluttering our homes, we often gain something far more valuable: clarity, peace, and purpose. From a wellness perspective, this can lead to:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Improved sleep

  • Better posture and less physical tension from overstimulation and sedentary lifestyles

  • More time for meaningful movement and mindfulness

Degrowth isn’t about deprivation—it’s about making space for what really matters.

As a chiropractor, I regularly see patients who are overwhelmed, not just physically, but mentally. The body holds onto that tension. A busy, cluttered life often translates into poor posture, shallow breathing, chronic pain, and fatigue.

But when people begin to slow down and simplify, something shifts. Their nervous systems calm. They feel better. Their bodies respond more positively to care.

Whether it's choosing to buy less, move more intentionally, or simply spend more time in nature, these micro-acts of degrowth can add up to major improvements in health and happiness.

Small Shifts, Big Results

You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. Start small:

  • Clear out one drawer or closet.

  • Take a slow walk without your phone.

  • Say no to one unnecessary commitment this week.

  • Focus on quality, not quantity—whether it's in relationships, food, or belongings.

The road to better health isn’t paved with more stuff. It’s often the quieter path, where less clutter, fewer distractions, and simpler routines create space for you to thrive.
