Understanding Chronic Pain

Do you know someone who lives with chronic pain?

Those suffering from chronic pain can understand that the physical pain they experience is only one element of a veritable cascade, which impacts every single aspect of their life.

First of all, just being in constant pain is tough not just physically, but also emotionally, and depression is a common diagnosis with chronic pain sufferers. Just imagine not knowing if or when the pain will ever subside. Think about starting every day for the rest of your life in terrible pain. Imagine friends, family and co-workers doubting the severity of your condition.

Now imagine being in pain - nighttime is a nightmare! Sleep is difficult, there is no comfortable position, there's no break from the pain, even at night.

So, the chronic pain sufferer begins another day, tired, exhausted and in pain. They are not as physically active as they once were. They are not able to enjoy the activities they once did. Through this cycle, the chronic pain patient may gain weight, see friends or family less and slowly disassociate more from the world.

Now consider that a comfort to the chronic pain sufferer may be food, alcohol or drugs. These temporary and dangerous distractions may have long-term implications: weight gain, personality change and addiction. These factors may further deteriorate the already strained relationships with friends and family. These factors may further isolate them.

For chronic pain sufferers who have been prescribed pain relief medication, they are just "masking" the actual cause of the pain, and there will still be limitations on their physical abilities and overall quality of life... not to mention the opioid addiction crisis in Ontario and across North America.

The best way to avoid chronic pain and the cascade of associated problems is to be proactive and avoid pain from the start. Stretch, exercise, eat healthily and live a life with balance.

And when in pain, seek help immediately.

When your body is in pain, it's a sign that "something is not right". Seek to treat the actual cause of the pain, rather than covering up the painful symptoms up with drugs. When possible, utilize natural treatments to get you back into good health and to help you remain in good health.
